Rides throughout the week, all year round


Velo Club York run a variety of rides through the week and at weekends, from chaingangs to club runs to cyclocross rides.

Whichever ride you're on, you are expected to be equipped and prepared to take care of yourself in the event of a puncture or minor mechanical.

Anybody's welcome to come an join our rides without being a member, but if you'd like to join us, drop us a line.


Tuesday & thursday (BST): Chaingang

Through the Summer months (starting when the clocks go forward and ending when they go back) VC York run a popular chaingang training ride. This is a close, fast group ride that will not only boost your strength and speed but your road craft too. 

Depending on numbers present we generally split the group into two or three bunches, the fastest of which go off first. Regardless of which group you ride in though, rest assured that this will be a training ride. The focus is on a smooth, fast and efficient ride where everyone gets the training they need.

Average speeds range between 19-23mph over a couple of hours depending on the group.

Both Tuesday and Thursday rides depart at 6pm from B&Q's delivery entrance on Osbaldwick Link Road.


Tuesday's route takes in Sheriff Hutton and Easingwold over slightly rolling terrain, and returns to York via Benningborough Hall and Tollerton.

Thursday's pan-flat route goes East through Holtby, Buttercrambe, Full Sutton, Fangfoss, Pocklington, then back via Allerthorpe, Melbourne, Sutton upon Derwent and Elvington.

Saturday: Rivet Ride

Start your weekend off with a fast training ride. Usually hilly and almost always quick. Expect three or more hours in the company of experienced racing cyclists.

Rides run all year round and start at 9am from the bus shelter outside Nestle on Haxby Road (opposite Joseph Rowntree Theatre).


Sunday: Cafe Ride

Three or more hours at a slightly more social pace than Saturday's club run. Good banter, steep hills and a stop at a cafe. 

Again, this ride starts at 9am from the shelter on Haxby Road.


Autumn Thursdays: Yorkcross

Cyclocross season starts in September, so towards the end of August we start a cyclocross group training ride, every Thursday until it's just too cold and horrible to continue.

Expect 2.5 hours of great laughs and very varied terrain in and around York including urban trails, steps, ploughed fields, wooded single track, bridges and even a beach every now and again. 

These rides require lights powerful enough to see by from around mid-September onwards.

All are welcome to join and if you're thinking of getting into Cyclocross, this is definitely the place to come. Nobody gets left behind (on purpose) and you will have a laugh.

Rides start at 6pm every Thursday from mid-August, departing from Exhibition Square.


Winter Thursdays: Group Night ride

When it's too cold for YorkCross, in the depths of Winter, we run a Thursday night group ride from 6pm. Lights are obviously required, as is appropriate clothing. Rides are generally two hours and into the Howardian Hills or the Wolds.

This ride is weather and attendance dependant, but when it's on, it starts from the bus shelter on Haxby Road at 6pm.
